Salem Details Revealed

Developer Seatribe has revealed more details about its recently-announced MMO, Salem. The game will take the bold move of combining “a charming and cute art-style” with, err, “permanent death.”
That’s the sort of mismatched combination of features I can really admire. Salem will be free to play and will let people take the role of New England colonists, trying to survive in the New World. To help out with this, there will be a “unique crafting, farming and building system inspired by 17th century alchemy.”
The persistent and open “sandbox” world will be populated by strange creatures like “Squonks and Hidebehinds” as well as the rather more traditional witches. Player-vs-Player will feature heavily, and there will be perma-death. Tom Söderlund, Project Lead for Paradox Connect describes that final aspect as follows: “If your character is killed in the game, and believe me it can be dangerous in Salem, their descendent has the ability to pick up where your character left off.” So, more of a semi-permadeath then.
Much like a witches cauldron, it all sounds like a strange mix; with the potential to be either delicious of poisonous. We’ll find out which when the game is released for PC later in the year.
