Original EverQuest goes free-to-play

EverQuest, one of the earliest MMO titles out there, is joining so many others in the field by going free-to-play. Of course, its sequel EverQuest 2, made the same move back in December and claims to have seen “amazing growth” since that time. Whether amazing growth goes hand-in-hand with increased revenue, however, is a different issue.
The switch to free-to-play for EverQuest will follow the traditional model, with different membership tiers (free, Silver and Gold) having access to varying parts of the game. Silver membership costs a one-off payment of $5.00 USD, while Gold will be a standard payment of $15.00 USD per month. You can see the different tiers of membership and their various benefits in the source link below.
“EverQuest players are some of the most loyal, long-standing players of any MMO in existence. With the gaming landscape changing every day, we want to ensure we continue to evolve the game to keep players engaged and bring in even more new players to further expand the community,” says producer Thom Terrazas of the change.
Current, active subscribers will automatically be given Gold membership, with lapsed subscribers being offered Silver. Naturally, there’s also a microtransaction store planned, which will have “mounts, illusions, house items, clothing, experience potions and more” for you to squander your (real life) cash on.
