Minecraft sales produce an estimated $33mil in revenue

A recent “ask me anything” thread posted on Reddit by Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson has revealed sales details for the runaway PC indie success story.
“The game sold about 800,000 copies at 9.95 euro and then so far 1 million more at 14.95 euro,” Persson said in response to a question about sales. A spot of mathematics shows this to be a revenue of around $33 million USD – an amount Persson says he tries “not to look at.”

This figure is obviously before taxes, PayPal fees and other administrative costs but is, nonetheless “a huge wad of money,” according to the game’s creator.
Elsewhere in the lengthy interview thread, Persson says his fondest personal Minecraft creations came early on in development: “I joined some multiplayer server and helped build a stone castle with a wooden drawbridge, some stables, and a moat.”
