Mike Capps Thanks Fox For Bulletstorm Sales Assist

Epic’s Mike Capps has made a nuanced statement about the controversy surrounding Bulletstorm’s release this month, suggesting the Fox News reports aided sales but were ultimately harmful for the industry.
You may recall a Fox scare-piece, published in early February, which made several unsupported claims about Bulletstorm and videogames in general; including the accusation (backed up by precisely no research) that games playing has led to an increase in sexual assaults. This, along with a similarly ill-sourced follow-up piece, were superbly assessed and critiqued by RockPaperShotgun’s John Walker.
Speaking with IndustryGamers, Capps chose his words carefully when asked if the Fox articles had helped sell Bulletstorm for them.
“For a game that’s over-the-top, they probably helped sell more units than they convinced people to pick at us,” he said, as part of a two-pronged answer. “As for what it does for the industry as a whole I think it’s terrible.”
So while Capps appears guardedly grateful for the individual sales assist from Rupert Murdoch’s station, he feels that misinformation about videogames continues to hurt the industry in the long-term.
