Space Marine focused on ‘visible violent death’

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is, according to Relic, focused on depicting ‘visible violent death’.
The description came from Space Marine’s Associate Producer James McDermott, who explained the importance Relic places on concentrating development efforts on a single element that will drive the game experience and resonate with consumers.
“Yeah, you’re going to play a Space Marine but, it’s more about the tools and the experience that you have as one of those guys,” said McDermott.
“For us, [the focus is] visible violent death… [The Space Marine] is there to strike fear into the heart of all who oppose humanity and there to strike visible violent death into those alien hordes. That’s the core of our experience, that’s the embodiment of the game and the combat.”
Further, when IncGamers asked Space Marine’s Creative Manager, Dan McGuffey, on why violence is such a successful tool for game developers, he said “Violence to me is just a great feedback loop that quickly signifies whether or not you’ve been successful.
“In Space Marine, that’s exactly what it does – it indicates success and a feeling of unstoppable power. It’s rewarding because it indicates that what the player is doing is having an impact in the world and that their presence is being felt.”
With visible, violent death as a mantra, we damn well hope our presence is going to be felt.
Look out for our hands-on with Space Marine later this week.
