Today, Amazon (the US branch) opened up a brand new indie games storefront complete with ‘launch day’ sales and bundle offers. Their stated intent is to help “independent game developers reach more customers, and help customers learn about more creative games.”
It appears to be a direct challenge to Steam’s Greenlight system, which has found itself in some pretty shambolic situations lately. Over on Reddit, Amazon’s Tony Valcarcel (posting as Tvacgamer) has been quick to give the impression that Amazon will be welcoming as many indie games as possible onto the new store page.
We’ve been working really hard these past few months to make our process as easy as possible to get through. In fact, in the past, 3 months or so, we’ve been reaching out to everyone we can find to get more Indie Games on sale.
Let me be 100% clear on this, we want to sell every functional Indie game available on the market and are building new processes and self service tools to make this even easier in the coming months.
TL;DR If you and Indie Game and want to get it on sale on Amazon email [email protected] and we’ll get the process started!
All of which is fairly unambiguous.
What isn’t clear at this point is what kind of revenue share deal Amazon will be offering these indie titles. At present, the games are only available to purchase in the US (or via the trick of giving a fake US address when purchasing, which isn’t really recommended for all sorts of bank security reasons.)
