Batman: Arkham City, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and World of Goo were the top videogames of the year, according to critic averages on aggregation portal Metacritic. All three walked away with an average of 96/100.
Interesting, all three of the above now share the website’s third-highest review score of time, alongside BioShock, Half-Life 2, Mass Effect 2, Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid 2 and The Orange Box.
As a comparison, the highest scoring games of all time on Metacritic are Grand Theft Auto III, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3.
Portal 2 also did well in 2011, scoring 95. While Minecraft, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Rayman Origins, Contre Jour HD, Sonic CD, Anomaly Warzone Earth, iBlask Moki 2 HD and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword all attained 94.
Were Skyrim, Arkham City and World of Goo really the VERY best 2011 had to offer? No.
