Iteration on Diablo 3 continues with the 1.08 patch which we hope will hit the public test servers in the not too distant future. A lengthy update from the the development team this evening highlights some of the key changes that are coming to the next update.

Blizzard are wanting to make the co-op experience more rewarding for players so there are a number of new features that will be rolling out including the “identify all” functionality for items, a new private chat IM option and a “players near you” option which shows which players are geographically closer to you to reduce latency problems that may occur.

There are also changes to the game mechanics in multiplayer including a reduction in monster health per player in-game which is being reduced from 70% down to 50%. This they say will “compensates for some of the inefficiencies that come with playing in a group”. New multiplayer bonuses are also being added but what exactly the buff will be has yet to be decided. Right now they are leaning towards a 10% XP gain for every additional player in the game.

It’s a pretty lengthy update so if you want to dig deeper then check out the full post on Diablo: IncGamers.

While I am still on the subject of Diablo 3, you can check out the slides from Jay Wilson’s GDC talk last week on Diablo: IncGamers. These are really interesting as they show early designs for the game including the skill and rune interface. It really does illustrate how simplified the final game became.
