If there was one feature that was missing in Diablo 3 that Diablo gamers would have expected to see when the sequel launched back in 2012 it was a ladder system

The Diablo 2 ladders proved very popular with fans of the series adding a competative edge to the hack and slash gameplay. Rising the ranks over a season to gain rewards really appealed to players.

This is a feature that didn’t go unnoticed by Path of Exile developers Grinding Gear Games who added ladders to their game as soon as it launched last year. Blizzard are playing catch-up with this feature and they’ve talked about a Diablo 3 ladder system on and off since 2012.

Today Game Director Josh Mosqueira posted a cryptic tweet which has got some fans excited. Let’s not get too carried away though, it’s pretty cryptic.

We only speak of it in hushed tones… we didn’t just build walls out of bones, but also ladders to climb over them…

With all the game-changing updates that arrived with the release of the 2.0 patch, a Diablo 3 ladder would certainly be the icing on the cake for a lot of players. How they would function with the new Paragon system is up for debate but it would be great to hear more concrete information on a ladder system if they are actually pursuing it now.

Update: He then went on to add:

Systems designers researching ladders… yup, fun to climb!
