Borderlands 2 one of the most successful titles ever for 2K

Take-Two’s financials for the second quarter are looking a lot healthier than the same period last year thanks to key releases which included Borderlands 2.

The highly popular action RPG shooter from Gearbox has done extremely well shifting 5 million units with strong digital sales. This has helped Take-Two exceed their projections with net revenue reaching $273.1 million compared to $107.0 million for the same period last year. Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two added:

“Take-Two’s second quarter revenue and earnings exceeded our outlook, driven by the breakout success of 2K’s Borderlands 2 and robust demand for our catalog and digitally delivered offerings. Our business continues to fire on all cylinders, led by terrific early results from 2K’s NBA 2K13, and the outlook for our upcoming releases such as BioShock Infinite is stronger than ever. As a result, we continue to expect to deliver revenue growth and Non-GAAP profits in fiscal year 2013. Moreover, with Grand Theft Auto V slated for spring 2013, we are poised to generate substantial revenue and earnings growth in fiscal year 2014.”

Gearbox are not giving anything away as far as commitments are concerned for a third game in the series but you can bet 2K will be pushing for it at some point in the future.

Not surprised but over double the net revenues is considerably better than anyone would have projected and they would be foolish to not release a 3rd.

I really enjoyed the original Borderlands, despite it being a bit rough around the edges. (especially in terms of its lack of UI polish on the PC) BL2, however, seems better in pretty much every way. Better writing, characterization (even if it’s goofy), gameplay mechanics, enemy variety, level design, visual quality and performance. The vehicles still feel awkward due to driving being mouse-driven, but that’s a minor quibble in a game that doesn’t center around driving.

What I fear is that the success of BL2 will make 3 a lesser game. Gearbox has a pretty good track record, aside from Duke Nukem Forever, but creating a high quality (read: not just “successful,” as sequels often are, regardless) sequel will be the true test for this developer.

If they can do that, and continue giving out free stuff like Golden Keys via teir SHIFT service, they’ll be just under Valve in terms of customer loyalty.

There are a few issues regarding leveling curve and recent patches, but overall they’ve done a good job. More decent looking heads for character customisation for free would be nice and better than golden keys as I’ve still got mine.
