How free is free-to-play?

Clarity Games describes the game as truly free-to-play. This is clearly a dig at digital card games like Hearthstone, which are free-to-play but require players to purchase cards or grind for hours to stay competitive. For Chroma: Bloom & Blight, truly free-to-play means that players will never need to purchase a single card pack. Every player will have access to every card in the game. Clarity assures players that this also includes expansions or any other card added to the game down the road.

You are probably wondering how long Chroma: Bloom & Blight will last on its Kickstarter funding if it doesn’t plan to monetize through card acquisition. Clarity Games is taking a slightly different approach and will make money through cosmetics alone. For now, the developer hasn’t detailed what will be customizable through cosmetics. However, from the Kickstarter page, you can see that cards will get unique artwork of varying levels. Other aspects of the game that are likely to be customizable with cosmetics are the playing board and Heroes.

The world of Chroma: Bloom & Blight

Chroma: Bloom & Blight is set in the world of Arholt. According to Clarity, every single card in the game has been carefully crafted to fit into the world and its lore. Some cards even contain secret bits of lore that can only be unlocked by using them. So, as you play Chroma: Bloom & Blight, you will unlock new pieces of the story and discover Arholt. There are numerous Heroes to meet from different factions with their own goals.

There are a few more stretch goals in sight for Chroma‘s Kickstarter campaign. So, if you like what you’ve seen so far, you can head over to the page and pledge. If you’d like more of a taste of the game, there is a free demo you can download through Steam. You can also add it to your wishlist if you’d like to keep an eye on it.
