Sir David Attenborough is a legend when it comes to documentaries, his soothing voice has educated millions about our planet and its inhabitants.
Sir David is about to step into the hi-tech age with his new documentary called Conquest of the Skies which is currently being filmed in Borneo. Atlantic Productions are bringing this new series to Sky 3D and the Oculus Rift. According to Atlantic’s commercial director John Morris, they have several Oculs Rift Dev kits they’ve been working with to make this the first wildlife production to come to VR.
“We’re now filming for the Oculus Rift,” Morris said, “so when we filmed our recent flight in Borneo, we filmed with an eight-camera rig, so you got the full 360° experience.”
Morris sounds confident that the Rift will be a successful platform stating that he thinks “millions” will be sold and it’s another “new platform you can monetize”. Ah! “monetise”, now it all makes sense.
A wildlife documentary in VR could be a very interesting experience but let’s hope this doesn’t catch on. Watching a TV show in VR is a solitary experience and it would be a sad state of affairs if we all sat down in a room, pulled on a VR headset and shut ourselves away from any social interaction whatsoever.
