Double Fine Adventure First Details Revealed, Named “Broken Age”

After months of waiting, Tim Schafer’s Kickstarter-backed adventure game has finally been given a name: Broken Age.

The classic point-and-click adventure game will chronicle two separate tales, that of a boy and a girl, whose lives parallel each other. The girl lives in a community who have decided to sacrifice her to a terrible monster [presumable to save their own lives] but she decides to test her fate and fight back. The boy lives a solitary life on a spaceship, cared for by a motherly computer. However, he wants to break free to lead adventures and do good in the world. Each wants to change the fate that their life has handed them and choose for themselves.

The Double Fine Adventure, as it has been called until the official name was revealed today at PAX East 2013, made waves around the world when it achieved its $400,000 funding within 8 hours and went on to reach $3.3 million dollars in funding by the end of the campaign.

This was remarkable for two reasons. First of all, Kickstarter had commonly funded video game projects that were a few tens of thousands, not enough to create rival large-budget commercial games. But, Tim Schafer’s believers proved that famous game developers could achieve a lot more. This created a new model which many have followed to pursue a method of funding that breaks developers free of the creative shackles and restraints that large publishers often bring to publishing deals.

The other remarkable point of this project is that most had thought the classic point-and-click adventure genre had died for good and no longer had any appeal. However, this was proven wrong as thousands of rabid adventure fans poured in their funding to help get the Double Fine Adventure started.

Tim Schafer originally became famous on the backs of his three acclaimed adventure games/series: the Monkey Island series, Day of the Tentacle, and Grim Fandango. After publishers were no longer willing to fund adventure games, he still managed to infuse lots of personality, wit, and charm into his new development studio’s games, like: Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, Costume Quest, Stacking, and The Cave.
