Failed test: Obscure renamed to Final Exam

Final Exam - 12

I can’t say this has taken me entirely by surprise, but The Game Formerly Known As Obscure has been renamed to Final Exam. Oh, and it’s got a website of its own and whatnot, too.

The reasoning for the name change is actually a little complicated, so bear with me. Back in 2004, there was a company called Hydravision who made a survival horror game called Obscure (or ObsCure, if you really like random capitalisation). It was enjoyed enough that they made a sequel. The company folded… and then reappeared earlier this year as Mighty Rocket Studios, who promptly announced a reboot of Obscure.

However, rather than being a survival horror game, said reboot was a cartoony 2.5D side-scrolling shooter. To quote studio director François Potentier: “[…] we understood that our fans expected a different content from a game entitled ‘Obscure.’ We understand fans all the better because we are first and foremost passionate gamers! Thus, even if the game makes a great number of references to Obscure and Obscure 2, we thought it important to rename it.”

On the plus side, the team are hoping that they’ll get the chance to make a “real sequel to Obscure” at some point.

You can have a look at Final Exam‘s website here to learn more about how it plays, who the characters are, and what sort of beasties you’ll be blasting, but I’ve chucked the screenshots into a nice big gallery for you below. Aren’t I sweet?

Final Exam is due out in September.
