Free Realms Goes Live Today

Sony Online Entertainment’s family-friendly MMORPG Free Realms is due to go live on PC later today. The official website is currently down, with the splash image stating “The Free Realms website is undergoing maintenance in preparation for launch. We’ll be launching Tuesday and look forward to seeing you in the game!”Free Realms is a free-to-play, free-to-download MMORPG, which uses streaming technology to remove the need for a big download. While subscriptions are available for players, these will apparently only unlock other bits of content, and won’t provide a huge boost to players as they do in some other free-to-play MMOs.The game is aimed at being family-friendly, with classes ranging from ninjas to kart racers, and players have the ability to swap classes on the fly without needing to start a new character. Combat is optional, with a large part of the game’s focus being on exploring, building, raising pets, and a variety of other activities and minigames. For more information, you can check out our video interview with Sebastian Strzalkowski, Free Realms’ art director.A PS3 version has been announced, but there’s no release date for that yet.
