FromSoftware can’t fix online issues for Dark Souls but at least Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin is working again

A trade-off.

The online servers for the Dark Souls games have gone through a lot this year. Just before the release of Elden Ring near the beginning of 2022, FromSoftware announced that it had to remove all online functionality from its Dark Souls games on PC due to some dangerous security issues. Just a few months ago, the studio announced that Dark Souls 3 was up and running again, but patient fans were still waiting to hear news about the first two games in the series. Now, FromSoftware has revealed that it resolved the online woes for Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin.

The news comes from the official Twitter account which says that the online functionality of the Scholar of the First Sin version (running on DX11) has been restored. The studio is working to restore online features for the base version of the game (running on DX9) and this fix will come at an unspecified later date.

Prepare to cry

Unfortunately, the news of Dark Souls 2 regaining online features was followed by some sadder news. FromSoftware confirmed that it would not be able to do the same for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. In a follow-up Tweet, FromSoftware said that it “will not be able to support online services for the PC version of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition that was released in 2012, due to an aging system.”

The studio thanked fans for their support of the original game before going on to mention that it is still working to restore servers for Dark Souls Remastered. Judging by how long it took to fix the online functionality in Dark Souls 3 and Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, it’s difficult to say how long it might take FromSoftware to resolve the issues plaguing Dark Souls Remastered. Dedicated fans will need to be patient until that time.
