PC games of 2013: The semi-definitive list, with release dates

Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 - 01

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Ultimate Edition (MercuryStream) – Release Date: 27 August
Since the PC is getting the sequel (see further down the list for that,) Konami thought it’d be a good idea if we could all play the first game too. It’s an ‘Ultimate Edition,’ which means bundled DLC, 60fps and extra layers of bishounen bathos. Maybe.

Lost Planet 3

Lost Planet 3 (Spark Unlimited) – Release Date: 27 August
The first Lost Planet title to be outsourced to a western developer (Spark Unlimited.) It’s a prequel of sorts, set long before the events of the first game and starring ice-road trucker everyman Jim Peyton (ok, fine, he’s actually a miner.) I’d imagine he’ll be trading that career for “shooting some aliens” quite swiftly.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Square Enix) – Release Date: 27 August
An MMO so terrible on launch that Square Enix literally had to extend the “free trial period” indefinitely to keep people playing it. But launch was almost three years ago, and a reshuffled development team has been busy overhauling the game. A Realm Reborn is the result of their efforts. Hopefully it’s a bit better now, eh?

Total War Rome 2 - 01

Total War: Rome 2 (Creative Assembly) – Release Date: 3 September
The eighth entry in the Total War series, and a second visit to Rome. Creative Assembly has been talking a lot about improving AI map diplomacy and adding new victory conditions, but hasn’t yet confirmed whether Time Commanders will get a second series on BBC 2. Sometimes, you really have to question developer priorities.

PES2014 - 4

Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 (PES Productions) – Release Date: 20 September
Since EA has suffered a funny turn and claimed most PCs aren’t powerful enough to run a proper version of FIFA 14 with the new Ignite Engine, Pro Evo is now the default football hope for 2013. The hope, hype, reality cycle for this series is legendary, but … maybe the new Fox Engine will make all the difference. Maybe this year is the one where Pro Evo retakes the crown. Oh man, I just got sucked in again didn’t I?

Deadfall Adventures

Deadfall Adventures (The Farm 51) – Release Date: 27 September
This is what happens when you can’t afford the rights to a genuine Indiana Jones FPS, but really, really want to make one. If Deadfall is anywhere close to the insanity of The Farm 51’s Necrovision (WW1 with vampires,) then it’ll be worth a glance.

The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot

The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot (Ubisoft Montreal) – Release Date: September
A free-to-play action RPG, whose big idea is the ability to create your very own dungeons. Construct fiendish traps to give fellow mouse-clickers repetitive strain injury while you pop out to do some looting of your own. Much will rest on whether the inherent system of microtransactions is merely objectionable or outright noxious.

Castle of Illusion

Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse HD (Sega Studios Australia) – Release Date: Q3 2013
I don’t know much about this side-scrolling platformer from the days of the Sega Mega Drive, but I’m delighted to learn that the wicked witch character who kidnapped Minnie Mouse is called ‘Mizrabel.’ Going HD should improve the visuals, but that pun is amazing in any definition.

DuckTales

DuckTales Remastered (WayForward) – Release Date: Q3 2013
Ok, this one I know slightly more about. Scrooge McDuck must bounce around platforms on his cane in an effort to become the richest duck in the world. He’s not quite the richest yet because, woah … hold on, his rival is a South African duck called ‘Flintheart Glomgold.’ Say what you will about Disney, they know how to name a villain.

Memoria

Memoria (Daedalic) – Release Date: Q3 2013
A point-and-click adventure that’ll continue the story started by Chains of Satinav and explore the fate of ambitious Princess Sadja. Players will control characters in two timelines, separated by 500 years but united by the need to solve puzzles by hunting around the screen for stuff.
