PC games of 2013: The semi-definitive list, with release dates

call of duty ghosts

Recommended Videos

Call of Duty: Ghosts (Infinity Ward) – Release Date: 5 November
Woof woof woof, bark. Tail wag. Tail wag. Woof, sniff sniff. Arf.

Need for Speed Rivals

Need for Speed Rivals (Ghost Games / Criterion) – Release Date: 19 November
The eternal tussle of cops vs racers continues in Need for Speed Rivals. Criterion is helping out, but most of the work will be done by EA’s new Swedish studio Ghost Games. This effort will be based in the fictional open spaces of ‘Redview County’ and will include the chance to deck your car out with Bond-esque devices like EMPs and on-demand roadblocks.

Watch Dogs

Watch Dogs (Ubisoft Montreal / Ubisoft Reflections / Ubisoft Romania) – Release Date: 19 November
Hack the planet from the comfort of your mobile phone. You are trenchcoated vigilante Aiden Pearce, a fellow who intends to use the city of Chicago’s interconnected information networks against it. As well as just dicking with people whose politics he doesn’t agree with, Pearce’s talents will extend to getting revenge on those who have wronged him. What’s the problem with just making a good old fashioned prank call, Aiden?

South Park: The Stick of Truth

South Park: The Stick of Truth (Obsidian) – Release Date: November
What can change the nature of a fart joke? Obsidian intends to find out, in perhaps the first ever South Park game likely to achieve plaudits higher than “well I guess it’s OK.” Series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are (for once) heavily involved, so scripting and voices should be suitably authentic.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Release Date: November (probably later for the PC version)
Are the jokes about Ubisoft condoning piracy with this release getting old yet? Yes? Alright, fine. In what is sure not to be the last Assassin’s Creed game, you’ll be filling the booty-chasing boots of Edward Kenway and swashbuckling your way around the Caribbean seas.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Wolfenstein: The New Order (MachineGames) – Release Date: December
Philip K Dick’s estate lawyers are circling around this what-if-the-Nazis-won-WW2 reboot of the iconic Wolfenstein name. It is the 1960s, but instead of hippies and love we’ve got deadly robots and aryan racial purity. Obviously there’s only one way to purge such nonsense from history. Lots of guns.

Dead State (4)

Dead State (DoubleBear) – Release Date: December
I do worry that apathy for zombies games will reach a critical mass just as Dead State gets around to release. That would be a dreadful shame, because the Kickstarter-aided RPG seems to genuinely be trying to do the “make it about the people, not the zombies” thing with its emphasis on keeping your group of survivors happy. Look, the main writer from Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines (Brian Mitsoda) is co-creating this. The chances of it being derivative and boring are basically nil.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 - 07

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 (MercuryStream) – Release Date: “Winter”
Winter is coming, and with it a sequel to Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. At the end of the first game SPOILER, so now you have to fend for yourself as SPOILER amidst the threat of SPOILER. Jean-Luc Picard is in it again (probably not a SPOILER,) so that should be good for a laugh. Expect a free-roaming camera and more third-person action adventure antics.

scribblenautsunmasked (2)

Scribblenauts Unmasked (5th Cell) – Release Date: Q4 2013
Maxwell will be employing his mystical, magical notebook to whisk up help from any and all DC Comics characters in this latest Scribblenauts adventure. A staggering 2,000 entries are promised, with multiple Batmen and all the well-known heroes rubbish shoulders with fellows from the deepest, most obscure corners of the DC archives (heard of Matter-Eater Lad? Me neither.)
