Ubisoft has announced that it has acquired Finnish developer RedLynx (best known for the Trials series of games). CEO of Ubisoft Yves Guillemot says he wants to bring the studio’s “powerful brands” to a broader range of platforms, and praised both the developer’s “long tail” sales and high replay value of its titles.
Trials 2: Second Edition was released on PC back in 2008, while the more recent Trials HD was a hit on Xbox Live Arcade in 2009. RedLynx has also developed for WiiWare, releasing MotoHeroz in 2011, and created games for the iPhone.
According to RedLynx CEO Tero Virtala, it was Ubisoft’s “focus on creativity and quality, and the fact that they base their long-term strategy on both the traditional and digital distribution video game markets” that attracted them to the deal.
No financial details regarding the acquisition have been disclosed.
Before anyone starts panicing and thinking that this automatically means all future RedLynx releases will be stuffed to the gills with DRM, remember that Ubisoft also publishes games by Nadeo (makers of Trackmania 2) and does so in a fairly hands-off fashion.
