Gather up your Orc and Goblin brethren for one last Waaarrrgh, because Mythic MMO Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning will be closing down for good come 18 December. The developer broke the news today through a website update attributed to the ‘Warhammer Team,’ which states “on December 18th, 2013 we will no longer be operating Warhammer Online.”

This update hints that a non-renewal of the licensing deal may be the main reason for the closure (though another factor is probably the MMO’s overall popularity,) noting that “as with all licensing deals they do eventually  come to end.” As a result of the closure date, there will be no more three month game time codes for sale and auto-renewal of accounts will cease on 18 September.

Warhammer Online launched back in 2008, focusing on the ‘Realm vs Realm’ system introduced by Dark Age of Camelot. Mythic’s update gives a nod to those who’ve been with the game this long, signing off with “thank you again for your dedication and support over the last five years.”

A lengthier post from Producer Carrie Gouskos goes into more retrospective depth about the MMO. If you wish to read that, head over here. Judging by the timestamps on Google news Massively had word of this first, so thanks to them.
