Square Enix issues Gamestop statement

Square Enix, the publisher of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, has issued a statement in response to GameStop removing free OnLive coupons from PC copies of the game.
“As part of Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s boxed offering on PC, Square Enix included a third party coupon. GameStop was not made aware of this inclusion and Square Enix respects the right of GameStop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies,” the statement reads.
It then continues in hilariously passive-aggressive style, suggesting that if players don’t want free stuff included with their game, they are welcome to shop at GameStop: “Square Enix invites gamers who want to purchase the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution without additional coupons to buy the game at any one of over 4000 GameStop stores in North America”.
However, this may not be enough to placate the US’s most powerful games retailer, as current reports suggest that GameSpot is now pulling all PC copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution from its shelves.
An unconfirmed screengrab of an internal memo is being circulated online, which appears to show instructions for stores to pull the game in preparation for a mass return to the vendor (Square Enix). The same memo states that customer returns with a receipt will be accepted.
Boxed PC versions of the title are no longer being offered for sale through GameStop’s website (digital versions are still being sold).
Hopefully this dispute will not overshadow what a fine game Deus Ex: Human Revolution is; as demonstrated by the very first IncGamers 10/10 being awarded to it.
