Star Trek Online goes free-to-play

Starting 17 January, MMO Star Trek Online will provide a free-to-play option while also offering an optional monthly subscription.
Free accounts will be dubbed ‘Silver’ and come with fewer features than the paid-for ‘Gold’ option.
Silver members will be able too re-spec characters, recruit bridge officers and purchase premium ships through a microtransaction system that using virtual currency known as ‘Cryptic Points’. Further, Silver members options in fleet creation, in-game chat, forums and customer service will be fewer than what Gold subscribers will have access to.
In an attempt to entice former players back into the mix, developer Cryptic Studios are offering Silver membership to those that have played in past before the general 17 Jan date.
