THQ shifts focus to core and digital content, kids division shut down

THQ has announced that it is going to cease operating in the licensed kids game sector. It will “exit its relationships” with holders of childrens entertainment IP.
Such content has made up a decent percentage of THQ’s output over recent years, including games featuring Spongebob Squarepants, Scooby Coo, Bratz and Pixar’s Cars.
The publisher has instead signalled that it will concentrate on core games and digital ventures – including support for new consoles and emerging forms of videogame consumption.
“THQ will be a more streamlined organization focused only on our strongest franchises,” CEO Brian Farrell said.
“The success of Saints Row: The Third is an example of what our revised strategy and focus can achieve. We have now shipped 3.8m units globally and are currently expecting to ship between 5m-6m units lifetime on this title.
“Additionally, our robust digital content offerings for this game have resulted in the highest digital revenue of any console title in our history.”
So, there you have it people, one publisher at least does care about the hardcore market and isn’t frantically trying to jump aboard the easy-money train.
