Valve to release Steam on Linux

Valve has confirmed plans to launch their Steam digital distribution platform on Linux, via the Ubuntu distribution.

The project has been dubbed Steam’d Penguins and has supposedly been in development since last year, with Left 4 Dead 2 to be the first game that will be ported across to work on Linux. A beta version of Steam’d Penguins is due to launch prior to the service coming into full release mode (we still don’t know when that is).

Whether or not this will push developers to include Linux support for their future PC releases remains to be seen.
