There will be no SteamOS exclusive games, says Valve

SteamOS

SteamOS won’t be hoarding all the best games for itself.

Valve has confirmed to IGN that there will not be any SteamOS exclusive games or apps, which should go some way to allaying the wilder suggestions that Half Life 3 might end up being SteamOS-only (the wildest part about that suggestion, of course, is that Half Life 3 will ever be released.) “We’re not going to be doing that kind of thing,” Valve’s Greg Comer told them.

“We don’t like to create those artificial barriers to accessing content,” he added. “We believe that, in maybe five years from now, folks will find it a quite antiquated notion that you should assume that when you change devices or platforms, that you lose all of your other games and friends.”

Another Valve employee, Anna Sweet, has said that the same will apply to third-party titles from other developers. “Whenever we talk to third-party partners, we encourage them to put their games in as many places as possible, including not on our platforms,” she states.

The only instance, according to Sweet and Comer, where a game may end up as SteamOS only, is when a small, independent developer only has the resources to create a title on one platform.

Further plans for Valve’s Steam Machines and SteamOS will be announced at the CES 2014 event in January.
