Xbox 720 will cost $99 with cable TV subscription, predicts Pachter

Michael Pachter has made a prediction regarding the retail model of Microsoft’s next console, which most of us are calling the Xbox 720 until we know any better.

Pachter, gaming analyst at Wedbush Securities, believes that Microsoft will adopt a pricing model similar to that of a smartphone – with a low up front cost and a rolling subscription.

“I think Microsoft’s got it right [with their console strategy], and I think Sony will keep plugging away because they have an integrated strategy across all of their consumer electronic products. Microsoft, they have a strategy to take over the world.

“Console will have to be multiple purpose devices, though. The Xbox 720, this is my prediction, is going to be your television as well [as your game console]. You’ll be able to tune into television through it.

“You wont need a ‘smart TV’ when you’ve got an Xbox 720, it will be your television and your internet. It’s going to be open architecture and I think it’s real trick will be that one Xbox will be able to display television to as many screens as you have in your possession.

“The next Xbox will be Windows for sure, and you’ll be able to open up multiple TV channels in different windows and you’ll use SmartGlass to shoot off different channels to how ever many screens you want. That is happening, that I’m certain of.

“I’m pretty confident that in the US Microsoft is going to partner with a cable TV provider, so I expect that the console will be priced like a smart phone. I expect you’ll be paying $99 for the console with a cable TV subscription.”

Pachter’s word came during his session today at the Evolve conference.

Stop trying to control every form of media I ingest. I just want to shoot things for a few hours.

  • King78

Why do people in the gaming media give this fool the time of day?

    • Peter Parrish

Because he’s so accurate with his predictions, King78!

      Here’s a Top 5 of Pachter’s amazing analyst skills:

(1). The iPhone isn’t a viable gaming platform (hmm)
(2). E3 is “headed for extinction” (er)
(3). EA will buy Take Two (umm)
(4). Assassin’s Creed 2 is totally going to be set in the 1700s (welp)
      (5). PS3 will get a price cut in 2008 (ah ..)

And that’s from a 2010 RAM Raider list.

Yes, the man is a total charlatan, but he provides a useful news resource in the sense that you can take whatever he says and assume the reverse will happen. So now we know this WON’T be the sales model for the next Microsoft console.

    Hes out if his mind

Obviously a prediction by analyst that knows nothing of hardware. Best of luck with predictions like that.

Why is it so hard to proof read articles – “You want need ‘a smart tv’. Clearly there is a difference between want and won’t. Are standards getting lower or do people just type stuff up and throw it on the web?

  • Utter

Doesn’t sound that far fetched and it’ll probably get more people to buy it if the console is cheaper and they can get cable without having to buy another box or special tv.

It won’t be the only way of buying it though. You’ll still be able to pay the $300 or $400

    • steve

it would get far less people to buy.

People dont want to make a console another monthly bill

      are you sure?

that isnt what hes saying, he said only

“It’s going to be open architecture”
Could of just stopped reading this right there. Microsoft is about as closed as closed-minded can be in terms of their 360s infrastructure. Its why there are absolutely ZERO MMOs released for the console (besides 11, but it was a tooth-and-nail fight for that one and Microsoft was desperate to get into the Japanese market).

If he honestly thinks that Microsoft is going to be willing to open their system enough to give cable providers a controlling interest in the console, he has exactly no clue what he is talking about then.

  • Shut the fuck up, Pachter. Oh, and NeoGAFers are a bunch of faggots. Deal with it.
