Youtube’s Content ID has been a mess for a long time and today they announced changes to the system which should help videogame content creators.
Up until now, Content ID claims could be placed on any video and the video creator would lose the revenue while the claim was being looked at. This was usually at a time when the video was getting the most hits and generating the most revenue. The person making the claim could prevent the creator from making any revenue at this key point while the dispute was being resolved. Not a great system if the claim is completely false.
Youtube is now making it so that when a claim is made against a video, the revenue earned from the video will be held by Youtube until the claim the claim or dispute is resolved. This means the content creator can earn the revenue when the video is still hot if the claim is rejected. The image below shows how this will work.
This is great news for gamers using Youtube who’ve been hit by false claims on their videos. Hopefully, those eager to file claims will think a little harder before doing so. It might not be worth their time.
