11 minutes of Starbreeze’s Syndicate

Starbreeze and EA have released a developer-commentated walkthrough, featuring an early level from the forthcoming ‘reinvention’ of the classic title.
This style of trailer seems to be getting more popular, which is pretty good news for players as it’s harder to hide faults behind slick editing. In this early mission from Syndicate we get an eleven minute look at the art direction, world-interaction (especially through the method of using an implanted chip to ‘breach’ the environment) and mission layout from the single player side of the game.
First impressions: it looks very little like the original Syndicate but quite a lot like Deus Ex: Human Revolution (vent travelling, turret hacking, et al). The breach powers also remind me a little of Bloodlines (although there you were using vampire magic to make people commit suicide, rather than computer science magic).
The situations presented look rather linear (oh look, a handy person to use this skill on!) but as it’s an early level this is probably just getting players used to how the various systems work. It also seems like the way to level up your skills in this title is to stab as many CEOs in the head as possible, which is something we should all be able to relate to.
Syndicate is due next year, on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. The release date has even been pushed up to 12 February, so you can buy it for Valentine’s Day. Aww.
