No mod tools for Battlefield 3 ‘as of now’

Just when Battlefield 3 was doing so well setting itself up as the darling of the PC military shooter crowd, it emerges that the game will not be getting modding tools.
In an E3 interview with German publication GameStar.de that the English press have only just noticed, DICE’s Patrick Söderlund says “As of now, we are not going to make any modding tools.” He justifies this in a somewhat limp way, suggesting that the new Frostbite engine would be too complex for modders to handle: “If you look at the Frostbite engine, and how complex it is, it’s going to be very difficult for people to mod the game … it’s quite tricky. So we think it’s going to be too big of a challenge for people to make a mod.”
Oddly enough, this isn’t the first time a lack of modding in Battlefield 3 has been hinted at by DICE. In an April interview with the same publication, DICE’s Patrick Bach had this to say: “Since the development of games is getting more complicated, it is also more complicated to create corresponding Modifications. For this reason, the modding is in downtrend. It’s sad but true.”
Battlefield 3 is due for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 release in late October. And you’d better like the way it’s presented, because you won’t be able to change it.
