Lionsgate acquires Dead Island film rights

Lionsgate has announced that it has acquired the rights to develop a Dead Island movie.
It’s very early days on this project, but a couple of names are already being associated with it. Sean Daniel (producer on The Mummy and Intolerable Cruelty) is reported to be developing the film through his ‘SeanDaniel’ company. A chap named Stefan Sonnenfeld is also said to be producing.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about this announcement is the way in which the press release from Lionsgate plays up Dead Island’s original trailer as a major factor in the decision to option the film rights. The video (shown below) caused a bit of an internet stir when it was released back in February; though the final game didn’t bear much resemblance to it.
Maybe this will be a chance to offer a take on the Dead Island concept closer to the concepts in the trailer. Or maybe it’ll be a cheap cash-in, featuring a bunch of stereotypes hitting zombies with weapons on the beach.
John gave the game 7/10 in his review, stating “Think of [it] as a B-game and you’ll be fine”.
