Cryptic Studios bought by Perfect World for $50 million

Chinese MMO giant Perfect World has purchased Cryptic Studios (Star Trek Online, Champions Online) from Atari for a reported $50 million USD.
Atari’s desire to sell the studio in order to alleviate debts was revealed during the company’s financial reports for 2010-2011, a year in which the business lost $7.5 million. As a result of the purchase, Cryptic’s MMO titles such as Star Trek Online would appear to be safe and should continue as before.
Perfect World have been opening the wallet quite a bit recently, having also secured a majority stake in Torchlight developers Runic Games earlier this month.
Chairman and CEO of Perfect World, Michael Chi, had some innuendo-laden words about the deal, stating: “This strategic acquisition will …. help us further penetrate into the U.S. and global online game markets.”
