Amongst the torturous tendrils of Activision-Blizzard’s latest financial report, it is possible to dig out a couple of interesting statistics. Blizzard properties are doing especially well at the moment, and the company reports gleefully that the Diablo 3 expansion Reaper of Souls soul 2.7 million copies in its first week.
The upcoming World of Warcraft expansion Warlords of Draenor is doing well too, having sold more than one million copies before it’s even released. That release date still hasn’t been confirmed, though Activision-Blizzard have now stated that it will be released before 20 December this year. In an accompanying earnings call, the company gave subscriber figures of 7.6 million for World of Warcraft, down slightly from the previous 7.8 million number.
Subscribers to the game are defined as follows:
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access.
Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees’ territories are defined along the same rules.
