AMD was the big winner in the console graphics card war, netting contracts from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo for all their 8th generation consoles. This power move finally paid off this quarter, as AMD collected $ 121 million profit on $ 865 million on their graphics division, leading to a total Q4 2013 profit of $ 89 million on $ 1.15 billion.
AMD really needed this, too, as the quarter just before that saw losses of $ 422 million. The suspect for this loss, their Computing Solutions division, saw a loss of $ 7 million off revenue of $ 722 million. This division includes graphics cards for PCs and smart devices, and AMD has pledged to invest more in this division to turn the tide. With all that console money, they can do precisely that.
