Just a short while before Nvidia unveils its next generation of graphics cards, AMD has an announcement of its own. After some teases here and there, it’s now confirmed that AMD’s RDNA 3 GPUs will launch on November 3. Scott Herkelman, senior vice president and general manager of Radeon, announced this earlier today via a rather straightforward tweet.
AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture has received plenty of buzz over the last year or so. But just yesterday, a blog post from AMD touted its performance-per-watt advancement. One of the major goals of RDNA 3 is to deliver better gaming performance without demanding sky-high power consumption. RDNA 2 already made some pretty big leaps in this regard, but RDNA 3 is expected to deliver at least 50% better performance-per-watt efficiency.
The RDNA 3 architecture is also bringing some other changes. For starters, the new GPUs are tuned for high clock speeds, allowing frequencies to increase by up to 30%. The RDNA 3 architecture will also allow GPUs to run at a lower voltage while maintaining the same clock speeds at lower power. AMD also has something new called “intelligent power management” within the GPU itself. Simply put, it’ll know when it should boost to higher frequencies to improve performance, but will reduce this when its unnecessary.

AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture focuses on power efficiency
The name of the game for AMD with RDNA 3’s launch is power efficiency. It wants to make sure that its graphics card architecture can meet the evolving needs of energy use. And this is a more important goal than ever as the needs for more efficient energy become more apparent. But it’s not just that which AMD will bring to the table. RDNA 3 also utilizes an advanced 5nm process node and improved Infinity Cache, offers better ray tracing capabilities, and more.

Announcing the date of RDNA 3’s launch just a short while before Nvidia’s own announcement is certainly strategic. But it’ll also be very interesting to compare both company’s approaches to the next generation of graphics cards. From everything we know so far, Nvidia is packing plenty of performance into its RTX 40 Series graphics cards. Ultimately, there are a lot of questions surrounding Nvidia’s upcoming release, which should get answers very soon.
