Axiom Verge Ups The Challenge With Surprise Randomizer Dlc Mode (3)

The test of time is usually what dictates whether a game has good design or not. Certain games might look ancient in comparison to the latest AAA hit, but those visual details should never lead to assumptions for the amount of fun one can have with system mechanics. Likewise, other indie games sport a distinct visual style, or tell really awesome stories. There really is a wide variety of possibilities out there. Therefore, it is not weird to see an almost six-year-old game get its first DLC to bring it to the attention of players once again. Axiom Verge, the Metroidvanian that released in 2015, is doing just that with its Randomizer DLC.

As the name suggests, the game will be getting a free Randomizer Mode. While it is in beta, as long as you own the game on Steam, you can gain access. For those looking for a fresh way to enjoy this particular gem of a Metroidvanian-style game, this is the perfect way to do just that.

The Axiom Verge Randomizer mixes up the experience by changing the locations of the in-game items. One would think that would make the game impossible to complete, as progression is usually gated by certain power-ups. That concern is unfounded, however, as game creator Thomas Happ has already taken that into account.

On the game’s official website, Happ shared that the Randomizer is aware of certain areas that require certain weapon characteristics for player progression. Thus, although what you may get is different, you will not be stuck.

Labor of love

The sheer amount of planning and execution must have been a gargantuan task. It all started out as a mod made by the Axiom Verge speedrunning community before Happ took over and made the Randomizer official.

If you decide to try it out for yourself, there are three different difficulties for the Randomizer. While Beginner may be easier to stomach, the other difficulties will require deeper knowledge about the game and its glitches. Speedrunners should feel right at home.

Additionally, a sequel to Axiom Verge is in the works, and more information will be shared soon. In the meantime, you can experience the fun that the first game provides.
