Square Enix lifted the lid off of Balan Wonderworld today, an action-platforming adventure by the creators of Sonic the Hedgehog. The announcement was part of the Xbox Games Showcase that happened today, and this game didn’t disappoint.
The trailer introduced the new franchise with a cinematic cutscene before jumping straight into gameplay. The game takes place in a whimsical and bizarre land, where the love for music and theater is strong. Aside from the theatrics, we’re introduced playable characters Leo and Emma who embark on a wild adventure. We say wild adventure, and mean it, because the level design and enemies look to be full of spunk.
Balan Wonderworld looks like it can compete with the best in its genre
‘Led by an enigmatic maestro named Balan, they must navigate through Wonderworld to restore happiness and balance the hearts and minds of all they encounter.’ It sounds a bit light-hearted, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that, considering the times. The Balan Wonderworld trailer previewed plenty of unique levels, characters, and bosses and frankly, the game looks amazing.
Costumes will also be important for characters to progress through the game. Fortunately, the developers boast that over 80 different sets will customize Leo’s and Emma’s appearances and alter their abilities. Think of costumes as gear or augmentations. The power to change looks will provide all kinds of possibilities, like being able to bash your enemies, walk on air, freeze time, and manipulate objects. Players will certainly need an extra edge to take on the variety of challenges that await.
The developer is a brand new studio known as the Balan Company, but don’t let that fact fool you. The studio employs various industry veterans including the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise creators. The team plans to release Balan Wonderworld in Spring 2021.
