Baldur's Gate 3 Character Creation Guide Background Races Origin

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers players several choices of backgrounds, origins, and races. Here’s the first part of our character creation guide to help you craft your hero.

Note: Please be reminded that this guide is intended for the game’s Early Access stage. Some information and mechanics might change in due course.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Character creation guide — Backgrounds and origins

The origins feature for Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently unavailable during this stage of the Early Access period. It’s supposed to let you play as premade characters. For now, though, the only option that’s available is “custom origin,” so you’ll have to create a character from scratch.

As for backgrounds, these are additional tidbits about your created character. They offer additional proficiency in a variety of mechanics. These include Insight, History, Acrobatics, and more. For instance, the Sage and Acolyte backgrounds are fairly decent if you want to strictly roleplay as caster archetypes.

Background Proficiency
Acolyte Insight; Religion
Charlatan Sleight of Hand; Deception
Criminal Deception; Stealth
Entertainer Acrobatics; Performance
Folk Hero Animal Handling; Survival
Guild Artisan Insight; Persuasion
Noble History; Persuasion
Hermit Medicine; Religion
Outlander Athletics; Survival
Sage Arcana; History
Sailor Athletics; Perception
Soldier Athletics; Intimidation
Urchin Sleight of Hand; Stealth

Baldur’s Gate 3: Character creation — Time to pick a race

After choosing your background, it’s time to pick a race. I’ve split these up into multiple pages to give you a better idea of the customization involved. Just click on a page for a particular race or subrace that interests you.

Note: When you’re done checking out which character race you’d like in Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s time to select your class. You can refer to our class guides for the Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Warlock, and Wizard.
