In the light of the hacks, Blizzard are has responded that they are taking the matter “extremely seriously” and that they’ve yet to find an instance of a player’s account being accessed through any means other than by logging in with their username and password.
“We’ve been taking the situation extremely seriously from the start,” said community manager Bashiok, “and have done everything possible to verify how and in what circumstances these compromises are occurring.
“Despite the claims and theories being made, we have yet to find any situations in which a person’s account was not compromised through traditional means of someone else logging into their account through the use of their password.”
Blizzard also suggests that players use the Battle.net authenticator, which provides you an extra (one-time only) password each time you log in. However, some users have claimed that their accounts have still been accessed after using the authenticator.
If you believe you have been hacked, the only fix Blizzard are offering at present is an account rollback, which will set your character and account back to a time before you believe you have been compromised. You will need to submit a support ticket in order to get in line for that.
Diablo 3’s real-money auction house is due to launch one week from today (29 May), which will present genuine risk to player’s finances if the hole in security are not plugged.
“We’d like to take a moment to address the recent reports that suggested that Battle.net and Diablo III may have been compromised,” said BLizzard in an official statement.
“Historically, the release of a new game – such as a World of Warcraft expansion – will result in an increase in reports of individual account compromises, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing now with Diablo III.
“We know how frustrating it can be to become the victim of account theft, and as always, we’re dedicated to doing everything we can to help our players keep their Battle.net accounts safe — and we appreciate everyone who’s doing their part to help protect their accounts as well.”
