The world of Borderlands is about to get even more star-studded. Not the kind in space, but rather, a Hollywood star. Cate Blanchett is in talks to star as the siren, Lilith, in Lionsgate’s movie adaptation of Borderlands. This is according to sources talking to Variety, while Lionsgate has no comments regarding the news.
The video game turned movie in the works will be directed by Eli Roth. Both Avi and Ari Arad will be producing alongside Erik Feig. The screenplay will be handled by Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin. The film’s executive producers also include Randy Pitchford, executive producer of the Borderlands video game franchise and founder of Gearbox Software, as well as Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two Interactive.
Having worked with the actress recently in The House with a Clock in Its Walls, Eli Roth would be very familiar with how to get the best out of Blanchett.
“I’m so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team, and studio,” Roth said back in February. “I have a long, successful history with Lionsgate – I feel like we have grown up together and that everything in my directing career has led to a project of this scale and ambition. I look forward to bringing my own energy, ideas, and vision to the wild, fun, and endlessly creative world of the game.”
First launching in 2009, 2K Games’ and Gearbox Software’s Borderlands series has evolved into a key franchise for the companies. The role-playing first-person shooter tasks players with exploring the frontier planets in space. Starting with Pandora and branching out even farther, the Vault Hunters go up against greedy corporations and ancient monsters and obtain plenty of loot to go with the action.
Lilith is one of the most iconic faces of the series and plays a major role throughout. Not only is she one of the playable characters in the first game, but she is also one of only six women in the galaxy to be a siren. It simply means she is badass as hell and can wield superhuman powers. That is a role that is certainly up Blanchett’s alley, considering she has taken up roles such as Hela in Thor: Ragnarok.
