Star Citizen’s Chris Roberts is fully behind the Facebook Oculus VR acquisition

The big industry surprise last week was the acquisition of Oculus VR by Facebook and reception of the news was mixed. Cloud Imperium’s Chris Roberts posted his thoughts on the deal today and unsurprisingly he is fully behind the deal.

One of the features Cloud Imperium as been touting for Star Citizen is Oculus Rift support and even at this stage you can wander around the hanger with a Rift strapped to your head. Chris like many others argues that the cash influx will allow Oculus to compete in the market against bigger players and more money means a possible lower price point for the consumer version. All valid points.

He also believes that despite their new found wealth, the Oculus team are fully behind the product. He commented:

“My hope is that Facebook’s funding will let Oculus compete with much bigger companies and deliver an attractively priced consumer headset at the scale needed for mass market adoption without the loss of the incredible passion that convinced me to back the project. I haven’t heard or seen anything to the contrary so until I do we are fully committed to supporting the Rift.”

Star Citizen

Chris Roberts left the hangar! Not fair.

With big money floating around some Star Citizen backers have been asking whether it’s likely that Cloud Imperium would sell up to a bigger company. With £41 million now in the bank there really is no need according to Roberts.

“Now to answer the myriad forum threads that popped up worrying about the possibility of Cloud Imperium being acquired by another, bigger company – don’t worry! We have no plans nor interest in following this path! We don’t need to go to anyone with deep pockets to make OUR dream a reality. To mass-produce hardware like the Rift, you need an outlay of hundreds of millions of dollars. Luckily our ships are digital so we have hardly any cost of goods, just the cost of developing the universe of Star Citizen and running servers that Star Citizen’s universe will be simulated on. Thanks to the generosity of the Star Citizen community we have these two things covered”

It’s reassuring to hear that everything is going well at Cloud Imperium and there’s little chance of someone like EA suddenly acquiring the developer. If that ever does happen I will refer you all back to this post.
