Crytek’s future games will be free-to-play

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has indicated that his company will soon focus exclusively on “triple A” (in other words “high budget”) titles that are free to play. It’s Yerli’s opinion that this presents the most “user-friendly business model”, and he has some fairly strong views on the culture of DLC and “premium services” that has arisen in the industry.

“If you look at what kind of games are done in the packaged goods market, with DLCs and premium services and whatnot, it’s literally milking the customers to death,” says the Crytek boss.

As a result, once Crytek has wrapped up the titles its currently working on (Crysis 3 and the Kinect-powered Ryse) it will begin to produce free to play titles. One such game is already in the works, the free to play shooter Warface.

The developer still wants to keep the quality of their games high, suggesting a budget of “between $10 [million USD] to $30 [million USD]” with with an entry price of $0 USD.

“The future is online and free-to-play,” says Yerli.
