The Callisto Protocol

Back in June 2019, we learned of a new organization called Striking Distance Studios. Led by former Visceral Games head Glen Schofield, the underlying direction was that the studio would expand the PUBG universe beyond its battle royale route. At least, that was the original idea that was sold. Fast forward to the present, and The Game Awards 2020 had yet another surprise for us. Striking Distance Studios has been working on a game that is giving off serious Dead Space vibes, and it is called The Callisto Protocol.

As a story-driven, singleplayer survival game, the trailer is certainly one to behold. With a human character seemingly trapped in a prison, it does not take too long before the true horror reveals itself. It’s nothing less than a disgusting, grotesque creature that has no mercy for its victims. And it is definitely not alone. You have been warned.

The void that is space

The Callisto Protocol brings players to Jupiter’s moon, Callisto, in the year 2320. This game looks like a fresh new take on the survival horror genre, you will need all of your skills and wits in order to escape the Black Iron Prison. Maximum security and terrifying monsters sounds simple enough. However, uncovering the prison’s dark secrets and escaping to tell the tale will be far from easy.

The Callisto Protocol will provide a blend of horror, action, and immersive storytelling. With Dead Space setting the world alight when it first debut, perhaps Schofield is going to do it again with this game. Many fans of the EA horror franchise would want nothing else.

Does this have anything to do with PUBG? It is still unclear, but it really does not matter at this point. The horror elements that are being shown off in The Callisto Protocol trailer are enough to get me on board. If it somehow links back to the battle royale, then all the better. If not, an experience like Dead Space would not hurt either. We will find out sometime in 2022.
