Destiny 2: How to complete Haunted Sectors in Festival of the Lost

Nearly headless? How can you be nearly headless?

This year in Destiny 2‘s Festival of the Lost, players will no longer be visiting the Haunted Forest. Instead, our trek takes us to Haunted Sectors. These are the Lost Sectors that you’ve seen before, except they’ve got a Halloween theme and new mechanics. Here’s our Destiny 2 Haunted Sectors guide to help you with this activity in the Festival of the Lost 2021 event.

Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2021: Haunted Sectors guide

Haunted Sectors aren’t immediately available at the start of the Festival of the Lost 2021 event in Destiny 2. That’s because you still need to acquire 100x candies and 3x Spectral Pages as part of the “Gone But Not Forgotten” quest from Eva Levante. Just do any activity (i.e., strikes) with a Festival of the Lost mask equipped and, once you’ve opened the chest to pick up Spectral Pages, the next step will be provided. This will unlock Haunted Sectors, accessible via an icon if you open the Tower’s map.

Summoning Rituals and the Headless One

There’s a new mechanic in play in Haunted Sectors. First, you’ll notice a five-minute timer. Next, you’ll see a control point nearby. If you stand on this, you’ll summon a Headless One. The Headless One is a Hive Boomer Knight with a pumpkin head (haha). Make sure you’ve got hard-hitting weapons like The Lament to take it out immediately. Once it dies, you’ll see that additional control points have appeared.

Note: Based on experience, no additional control points/Headless Ones appear after your 10th kill.

Taking out the boss with Pumpkin Bombs

Basically, just kill mobs and Headless Ones within the next five minutes (it’s a great way to farm candies). After five minutes have elapsed, the boss in that Haunted Sector will spawn. It could be a different enemy (i.e., Vex Hydra, Hive Wizard, or Fallen Captain), but the mechanics will be similar:

  • Each boss’ HP has three segments. Taking out a third of its HP will make it immune to damage.
  • When this happens, stand on a control point, summon a Headless One, and kill it.
  • The Headless One will drop two Pumpkin Bombs. Throw them at the boss to break its shield.
  • Repeat the steps until the boss is downed.

If this is your first time doing this activity, return to Eva Levante to continue the “Gone But Not Forgotten” quest chain where you’ll interact with the Book of the Forgotten. You’ll also notice that you can receive a pinnacle reward in the Haunted Sector if you can kill 30x Headless Ones across multiple runs.
