Eliminate them since the machinery will slowly crush you.

Your goal here is to look for metal grates on the floor. Three of these have lit panels (white lights) that are initially hidden until you shoot the grates. Destroying the three lit panels prevents the walls from crushing you.

When you’re done, check one of the grates for an opening. Jump down to do battle with the Scorn.
