Prince Of Persia The Sands Of Time Remake E3 2021 Ubisoft montreal Forward

Development for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been taken over by Ubisoft Montréal

Nearly frozen in time.

Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is in trouble, and the concerns began from the start. Revealed in September of 2020, the game sported a graphics engine that left a lot to be desired from a remake. Ubisoft was targeting a 2021 launch, but that got delayed indefinitely following backlash from fans. The company later changed its release window to 2022-2023. Since then, it’s been silence. Until today, as it was announced that Ubisoft Montréal was taking over development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake.

The news was broken by the PoP Twitter account. The message stated that development is now in the hands of Ubisoft Montréal, which is “building upon the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai.” Ubisoft Montréal will “take the time they need to regroup on the scope of the game to deliver you the best experience.” As for the release, the message merely reads that the game will be ready “when it’s ready.”

Of course, that could allude to a further delay. The 2022-2023 release window was the target, but that was never a guarantee. But like with Skull and Bones, Ubisoft seems prepared to furiously push on with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake now that it’s been passed to the Montréal studio. The Canadian developer was the creator of the original game, which released way back in 2003.

The wandering prince

The goal of the remake was to breathe new life into the hack-and-slash classic. At the time, Ubisoft promised “realistic graphics,” along with an updated control scheme “rebuilt and updated for today’s standards.” Everything, from the animations, to the cinematics and soundtrack was to be remade. The game was also going to have the original 1992 game inside as an unlockable bonus.

Frankly, I’m still looking forward to the remake. The 2003 original was superb. Hopefully, Ubisoft Montréal can recapture that magic whenever Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake launches. One of these years.
