With the release of Season 28 in Diablo 3, a few little tweaks and additions were made to the game. One of the more notable ones was the Altar of Rites which allowed players to equip Legendary potions to bring even more pain to their enemies. A slightly more overlooked addition to Diablo 3 was the new ability to upgrade a Legendary item using Kanai’s Cube. With this new mechanic, 100 Primordial Ashes can be used to upgrade a legendary item to a Primal item.

The first thing you’re going to want to check is that you actually have Kanai’s Cube. You will find this in any one of your bases after clearing out the Elder Sanctum in Act III. The cube allows for a number of transmogrifications including the forming of Primal Ancient items.

To upgrade your Legendary item, you will need 100 Primordial Ashes and one non-crafted Legendary item. Once you have these items, simply drop them into the cube and hey presto, there’s your new Primal Ancient item.

Where to find Primal Ashes

The only way to farm Primordial Ashes is to salvage Primal Ancient items. You will find that these are dropped when you complete Rifts at level 70 or higher. Salvaging these items will yield 55 Primordial Ashes. In this case, you will need to salvage two Primal Ancient items to have enough to upgrade a Legendary item using Kanai’s Cube.

The drop rate on Ancient items is low; only 10% after soloing a Greater Rift. To add to this, there is only a 2.5% chance that the item will also be Primal. You’re going to have to do some grinding.

Primal Ancient items are significantly more powerful than their Legendary counterparts. Of course, getting your hands on a few sets of these will guarantee you wade your way through the hoards with renewed vigor. But remember, stats are always more important. Don’t go scrapping great gear just for the sake of having a Primal Ancient.
