One of 2019’s biggest hits, Disco Elysium, is crossing the big divide, according to Variety. Together with production company dj2 Entertainment, developers ZA/UM are planning to develop a TV series based on the game.
If you’re unfamiliar with Disco Elysium, know that it can be complicated. The story follows a detective trying to solve a crime that has ramifications for several powerful organizations and even a potential civil war. Our protagonist is no angel either, as the player’s choices can mold him in a variety of different directions.
One of the best
After launching in October, Disco Elysium received praise from critics and fans alike for its writing and gameplay designs. The art style and aesthetic also made it stand out from its contemporaries. This resulted in the game bringing home many awards, including best narrative and best independent game at The Game Awards. The BAFTA also gave it three awards. Time Magazine provided it with the ultimate honor as one of the best games of the decade.
“We’re so gratified at the response ‘Disco Elysium‘ has received, and very happy to be teaming with dj2 to expand the franchise for other media and new audiences,” Helen Hindpere, lead writer of ZA/UM, said.
“Disco Elysium is a phenomenal property with an expansive world and unlimited potential,” dj2 CEO and founder Dmitri M. Johnson added. “The dj2 team is truly thrilled about this extraordinary opportunity to be part of it all.”
Building a foundation
Currently, the potential TV series has no writers or platforms attached. dj2 Entertainment plans to meet with potential writers and hopes to start pitching the Disco Elysium series in 2020. While some worries will remain as to how the many facets of Disco Elysium will transfer into a non-interactive piece of entertainment, Johnson’s role as a co-producer on the Sonic the Hedgehog movie may come in handy. We will have to wait and see how it turns out.
