EverQuest free-to-play ‘launch’ coming this March

Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed that MMO EverQuest will go free-to-play on 15 March. That will make it almost exactly 13 years since the game originally launched on 16 March 1999.
EverQuest will adopt a tiered membership system in which players can play an optional monthly subscription to gain access to content unavailable for free. There will also be an in-game store dealing with microtransactions for items, attire, weapons and the like.
August 2010 saw EverQuest II employ the free-to-play model, so the original game is actually some way off the pace of modern change.
