Shock news: a major high-street games retailer is actually doing something with PC games.
Well, sort of. I mean, it’s GAME holding events for “Minecraft Month”, and I’m going to take a wild guess that the One True version won’t exactly be a highlight. I mean, it’s Minecraft. It’s on phones and tablets and handhelds and both both recent generations of consoles. The PC version might be mentioned, I guess? I just kinda doubt it, considering that the high street stores have been slowly squeezing their PC sections down to a size that has to be measured in atoms. Although this is at least in part due to Steam squeezing the high street stores’ ability to sell PC games down to a size that has to be measured in atoms, I guess.
As proof of this, August is apparently Minecraft Month, even though the game was released on PC in the month of November. Why is this? Because this is the month it’s getting released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PS Vita. Heresy.
Anyway! Regardless of whether or not the PC version will be a focus, I suspect that the event will be fun for all platforms. I don’t quite know what’ll be going on at each event, but the press release makes mention of building challenges, timed building competitions, and tournaments. Of course, the press release also calls Minecraft “exicting” and refers to the game as “Mincecraft” at least once, soooo…
The events will be running at different times in each store, with Falkirk being the first (taking place today) and Aberdeen Union Street closing things off on 30 August. 140 stores are taking part, and yes, even the Isle of Man’s GAME store is apparently going to be hosting one of these events, so I’d imagine that – if you’re in the UK – at least one within driving distance will have just such an event. Head to your local GAME store and ask for details, I suppose, because they sure as hell didn’t give much in the press release.
For instance: I don’t know what’s going on at these events, as noted above. I don’t know when in the day these events are being held, because the press release mentions “a great way to keep the whole family entertained this summer” and then goes on to mention “lock-in events.” So are they during the day? Are they lock-ins after the store closes? If they’re lock-ins, are the Whole Family going to be awake? Are they different for each store? What the hell is going on? I DON’T KNOW.
I’m sort of tempted to turn up to the Isle of Man one (if I can find out when in the day/night it’s being held) and ask inappropriate questions about the PC version, as it’s been a few years since I was last thrown out of GAME. It sounds like a lot of effort, but “I got thrown out of GAME because I started shouting about the PC version of Minecraft” might make for a good article, so you never know.
