Gears 5 tech test details released ahead of July 19

Gears 5 Versus Technical Test details released

Nothing like a break-the-servers event

If you’ve been waiting to try out Gears 5, here’s your chance. As we reported last month, The Coalition will offer a technical test trial period for players. There will be two focused Technical Test periods available. The first one comes on July 19, and the second on July 26. Each test will be available for about three days. Here’s what you can expect in terms of gameplay and multiplayer modes.

There are three distinct modes across two brand new multiplayer maps to play throughout both test periods. First, you can try the Arcade mode, which is a new approachable yet frenetic Versus experience. Second, the Escalation mode, which is the pinnacle objective mode of Gears, now back and better than ever. Finally, you can try King of the Hill, which is basically a capture-the-hill mode, where you can enjoy all the gore and carnage.

Apart from these three modes, you can also try out two new features that come with Gears 5. The first one is Bootcamp, where you’ll practice your skills and learn new mechanics in the new training and tutorial mode. Then there’s Tour Of Duty, where you’ll experience a mini Tour of Duty, completing Medals to unlock exclusive Tester Weapon Skins you can take with you to Gears 5. If you complete all three Medals, you’ll unlock the exclusive Tester Banner that you can showcase in Gears 5.

The studio will reveal more details about Gears 5 Versus within the next weeks, following the weekend of Gears 5 Escalation action and more from the ELEAGUE Invitational tournament.

Gearing up for Gears 5

The Tech Test will be available to pre-download from July 17 for eligible players. It will be a 15GB download approximately. The first period will run from July 19 at 10:00 AM PDT until July 22 at 10:00 AM PDT. The second period will run from July 26 at 10:00 AM PDT until July 29 10:00 AM PDT. The goal of the Tech Test is to put the Gears 5 servers to the test by handling a great influx of players ahead of launch day. Gears 5 has an access queue system in place to protect server stability as much as possible, but you should be aware that you may encounter some queueing at first.

To participate, you can go two ways. If you are a subscriber of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or Xbox Game Pass, access is included in your membership automatically, both on Windows 10 PC and Xbox One. If not, you’ll have to pre-order the game digitally via Xbox Store, or by redeeming a code provided when pre-ordering a physical copy at participating retailers (Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart). Since it’s an online multiplayer test, you will require an Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership to play.

Gears 5 will release on PC and Xbox One on September 10. You can find more details on the official website. Check out our breakdown of the game’s PC requirements here.
